★ August Special Event ★ Weekend Master Class ★
The Weekend Master Class series is an intensive workshop program curated by Cats Downstairs Rope Salon. Over the weekend, we spend average 6–12 hours to immerse ourselves in the aesthetics and details of Kinbaku with our international guest-instructor from all angles. In the program, veteran bakushi will work closely with participants, focusing on every details and rope patterns. Through focused, hands-on training, the feeling of the craft will be developed into the students’ own practice.
Throughout the class, the instructor carefully examines each participant’s subtle movements and offers adjustments for greater effectiveness. Every workshop introduces a new rope-bondage theme—an excellent opportunity for those newer to kinbaku to step outside their comfort zone and strengthen their foundations, and for more experienced practitioners to find fresh inspiration and challenge.
★ Artist Introduction
★ Federico Kirigami
Federico Kirigami, from Milan, is one of Europe’s most highly regarded bakushi. Deeply immersed in traditional Japanese kinbaku, Kirigami has developed a distinctly individual aesthetic. The Yūgen studio he created in Italy—a rope dojo that blends Japanese and modernist architectural language—echoes the character of his rope work. Kirigami excels at creating an intense sense of inner exposure through slowness. With attentive observation, he gradually peels back the layers of the person being tied, creating rope scenes marked by a powerful sense of connection. His work often reveals a contradictory quality in which elegance and melancholy coexist.
In recognition of his distinctive aesthetic and profound understanding of Japanese culture, Kirigami was invited in 2023 by renowned kinbaku photographer Norio Sugiura to serve as a bakushi for Kinbaku Sajiki. He remains the only artist from outside Japan to have received this honor, reflecting the high regard for his work within Japan’s kinbaku community.
★ Martha Tenshiko
An internationally recognized rope model, Martha Tenshiko is Kirigami’s long-term partner and also a rope artist in her own right. Since 2020, she and Kirigami have taught kinbaku and semenawa together in Milan. Tenshiko is known for her quiet, composed style and her expression of the beauty of anguish, bringing deep emotion and a strong sense of presence to Kirigami's rope work.
★ Schedule & Course Content
In the Weekend Master Class, Kirigami will share the cultural history of kinbaku, his personal aesthetic, and the essence of desire that's core to the craft. Students will learn how attention to detail and care for the person being tied can be embodied through rope. For Federico, the two are inseparable.
